Parish Priest

Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church Gold Coast - Our Priest

The Very Reverend Father Romanos Stergiou was born in April 1972 in Sydney, New South Wales. Following his secondary education, he pursued theological studies at St Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney (Sydney College of Divinity), where he graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.). In 2015, he undertook further pastoral formation at the Queensland Institute of Clinical Pastoral Education, earning the Certificate of Pastoral Education.

Ordained to the diaconate in December 1996 and to the holy priesthood in January 1997, Father Romanos was soon after appointed Parish Priest of St Anna on the Gold Coast.  He was elevated to the office of Holy Confessor in Kogarah, Sydney, in 2016, and later to the dignity of Protopresbyter by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia at St Anna in 2022.

Since the outset of his priestly service, Father Romanos has represented the Orthodox Church in ecumenical and civic settings. In 1997, he was appointed Orthodox delegate for Queensland Churches Together. From 2001 to 2020, he served as the clerical representative for Queensland on the National Archdiocesan Council.

His pastoral reach extended beyond the parish through his chaplaincy work, serving as Chaplain within the Spiritual Care Department of Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital (2015–2022), and as a part-time Chaplain to the Queensland Police Service (South-East Region) from 2015 to 2016.

Father Romanos has also contributed to the intersection of theology, spirituality, and public life. Between 2014 and 2016, he was invited as a Guest Lecturer at Bond University, where he taught Year 2 Medical Students in the course Spirituality and Medicine. He has served on the organising committee for the Queensland Police Service’s annual Multi-Faith Dinner (South-East Region, 2015–2016) and continues to support the Gold Coast Mayor’s Office in the annual Mayoral Prayer Breakfast (2016–present). Since 2020, he has been a standing member of the Community Cabinet for the Federal seat of Moncrieff, contributing to dialogue between faith communities and civic leadership.

Above all, Father Romanos is a devoted father of two young adult children and remains deeply committed to the spiritual care and pastoral life of his beloved flock at Saint Anna on the Gold Coast.
