In the Orthodox Church, death is viewed as a passage from earthly life to eternal life with God. It is considered a dormition or “sleeping” in the anticipation of the second coming of Christ where He will come to judge “the living and the dead” (Nicene Creed).
The end of earthly life is approached with prayer, repentance, and the Holy Sacraments, especially Holy Confession, Holy Unction, and Holy Communion to prepare the soul for its journey. The church also offers support to grieving family members through prayer, spiritual counselling and social means.
The funeral service is a solemn and prayerful farewell, emphasising both sorrow and hope in the Resurrection. Hymns and prayers ask for God’s mercy, while the body is honoured as a temple of the Holy Spirit.
The Church continues to pray for the departed, affirming faith in Christ’s victory over death and eternal life to come.
