Holy Communion

Holy Communion

Preparing for, and receiving Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church, is a sacred and transformative experience. The Orthodox Church teaches that the Holy Eucharist is the very Body and Blood of Christ, uniting believers with Him and one another.

Preparation to receive Holy Communion involves prayer, fasting, repentance, and, when necessary, Holy Confession, ensuring a pure heart before approaching the Chalice. Prior to receiving Holy Communion, Orthodox Christians observe a prescribed period of fasting (abstinence from meats and their products), culminating in complete abstinence of food and water on the day, and recite specific prayers before Holy Communion to cultivate reverence.

Receiving Communion requires faith, humility, and a life committed to Christ. This sacred act nourishes the soul, strengthens the believer, and deepens communion with God and His Church, bringing spiritual renewal and grace. To receive Holy Communion, one must be baptised and/or Chrismated in the Orthodox Church.
