We currently run classes for school aged children and have recently re-introduced classes for Adults. The Greek Ethnic School of St Anna is the only Greek language school on the Gold Coast, dedicated to preserving and promoting the Greek language and culture.
Student classes run every Tuesday and Wednesday, parallel to Queensland school terms, and our school building is conveniently located next to the Greek Orthodox Church of St Anna at 31a Crombie Avenue, Bundall.
We follow the Australian Curriculum for Languages, with a focus on Modern Greek. Our school offers composite classes for students from Year 1 to Year 12 (ages 5 and above) and welcomes students of all language levels and abilities.
Our curriculum is designed not only to develop students’ communication skills in Modern Greek but also to immerse them in Greek culture, history, and identity. Students explore ancient mythology, poetry, literature, art, traditional food, song, and dance, enriching their connection to their heritage.
Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority recognises our school as a senior subject for Years 11 and 12 students, which can be included on their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and contribute towards ATAR calculations.
The school is led by our Principal, Maria Stavrinos, who has been a member of the Greek Orthodox Community of St Anna for over twenty years. Maria holds formal qualifications in law, which provide valuable organisational and administrative skills that are applied to the running of the school. Her true passion lies in education and teaching heritage languages.
Maria remains committed to delivering high-quality Greek instruction and stays up to date with current teaching methods through regular professional development courses offered by Community Languages Australia. Maria is also a member of the Ethnic Schools Association of Queensland Inc. Under her guidance, and with a dedicated team of teachers, the Greek Ethnic School of St Anna continues to thrive as a nurturing, culturally rich environment for learning and community.
The Greek Ethnic School of St Anna was established with the mission of preserving the Greek language and culture for Greeks living on the Gold Coast.
Founded in the mid-1970s by the Greek Orthodox Community, the school operated on a volunteer basis for over thirty years. Classes were held in the community hall by passionate community members committed to supporting its growth and success.
As student numbers increased, the need for a dedicated facility became apparent. In 2004, with the generous donations made by the Nikiforides Family, Cecil Koutsos, and an anonymous donor, the school moved into its own building. This marked a significant milestone in the community’s history.
On 25 April 2004, the school building was blessed by His Grace Bishop SERAPHIM of Apollonias, representing His Eminence Archbishop STYLIANOS of Australia, marking a new era for Greek language education on the Gold Coast.
Since then, the school has expanded alongside the growing Greek community, welcoming students from families relocating from interstate and overseas. Today, the Greek Ethnic School of St Anna remains a vital part of the community, continuing to foster language, culture, and identity among young Greeks and the wider Gold Coast population.
